Abstract
We performed a double blind study to evaluate the therapeutic effect of Viramid?-B ointment in herpes simplex and herpes zoster with or without secondary infection.
We studied a total 171 patients including 85 herpes simplex, 75 herpes zoster, and 11 herpes zoster with secondary infection patients by topical application of Viramid¢ç-B ointment or placebo.
The estimation of therapeutic effect of Viramid?-B ointment was done by the duration from the second day of treatment to the days of vesicle disappearance in herpes simplex, crust formation in herpes zoster, and lost of pustule or ulceration in infection herpes zoster.
The results were as follows:
1) Herpes simpex: The percentage of disappearance of vesicles within second day, 4th day, and 6th day of treatment were 37.0%, 78.3%, and 95.7% respectively in the Viramid?-B group and 10.3%, 38.5%, 79.5% in placebo group.
The time of disappearance of vesicales in the Viramid?-B group showed shorter than that in placebo group.
2) Herpes zoster without secondary infection. The percentage of crust formation within the second day, 4th day, and 6th day of treatment were 13.3%, 48. 9%, and 73. 3% respectively in Viramid?-B group and 3.3%, 16.7% and 53.3% in placebo group.
3) Herpes zoster with secondary infection. The percentage of disappearance of pustule or ulceration within second day, 4th day, and 6th day of treatment were 12.5%, 50.0%, and 75. 0% respectively in the Viramid¢ç-B group and 0%, 33. 3%, and 66. 7% in placebo group.
